Mendocino County

The legend of Samuel Z. Truscott captures the history of California’s wine industry. In the summer of 1849, Truscott crossed the California Sierras looking for gold. After several successful years as a partner in a profitable claim, Truscott moved to San Francisco and owned a business that delivered Californian wines to restaurants and residents. Enchanted with the local wines, he headed north and learned winemaking from the Italian and Swiss immigrants while working in wineries in Sonoma County. In his later years, he resettled in Mendocino County and bought land, there planting and tending a vineyard that grew red wine grapes, which he sold to small wineries. It is to Sam Truscott’s storied spirit that the Weibel Family dedicates their Mendocino County Zinfandel, honoring the founders of Californian wine.

Harvest

The 2005 growing season was mostly cooler than average, which allowed the grapes to hang longer on the vines without causing the sugar levels to rise too high too quickly. This allowed the fruit to fully mature yet keep its crisp acidity. The grapes were harvested late in the season due to good weather.

Mendocino County has warm days like Napa Valley and Sonoma County, but cooler nights, which accentuates the delicate flavor nuances in the grapes, as well as promoting a refreshing crispness. Our H&W Estate Vineyard showcases that classic Mendocino County character superbly.

Tasting Notes

Upfront aromas of berries and cream with a pallet full of currants, cherries and bramble berry with an undertone of cinnamon and cocoa. Aged in French oak barrels to provide complexity and soften tannins giving the wine roundness and full body.

This wine will pair well with most meat dishes, steaks, chili, stew, smoked salmon, and grilled rosemary chicken. Drink now through 2010.

Justin Weibel, Winemaker
