7 Things Everyone Should Know About Sparkling Wine

Sparkling wines are the go-to option for any celebration. Whether it is a graduation party or dinner date, sparkling wines make everything better. If you consider yourself a wine enthusiast, you must be proud of your wine knowledge. However, did you know that the bubbles in your sparkling wine are a product of secondary fermentation? The process is known as ‘méthode champenoise’, which results from yeast addition.

Read on if you want to learn more exciting tidbits about sparkling wine.

Sparkling wine Vs. Champagne

Many people use the words sparkling wines and champagne interchangeability, but did you know all champagnes are sparkling wines, but not all sparkling wines are champagne. It is because champagne is made only in the Champagne region of northeastern France. Sparkling wines made out of France are not champagne.

Flutes don’t make sparkling wines better

The notion that you can drink sparkling wines only in flutes or that doing so enhances their taste is false. Using your regular wine glasses is the best option as their more open design lets you easily smell the wine.

You don’t need to save your sparkling wines for special occasions

Keeping your sparkling wines for years to open on a special occasion, as you do for other wines, is not fruitful. Doing so doesn’t enhance its taste or potency. Because the winemaker has already aged it to the correct amount before selling it, you can open it immediately after buying.

Don’t store your sparkling wine in the refrigerator

Putting your sparkling wine in your fridge can do more damage than you know! Doing so can turn it into a flat wine instead of the fizzy concoction it is meant to be. The cold temperature dries out the wine’s cork, and the bottle’s carbonation escapes, removing all the fizz. Instead, store it in your wine cellar to keep it at the right temperature until you are ready to open it.

The names change in different parts of the world

Sparkling wine is known by various names in different parts of the world. Here’s what they called:

  • In Germany, it is called Sekt

  • Prosecco in Italy

  • Cava in Spain

  • Champagne in the Champagne region of France

  • French Sparkling wine in the rest of France

  • American Sparkling wine in the United States of America

Light can mess with your sparkling wine

If you buy a sparkling wine bottle to use later, you need to ensure that you don’t expose it to sunlight or that any light can deteriorate its quality. Sparkling wines are made in caves and bottled straight out of them to reach you. If you expose it to light and don’t store it properly, you can ruin it. When buying a bottle, always ask for a bottle from the restocking as it won’t be damaged by light exposure.
